A Zoning Change for a New Restaurant
Battlefield is a city of about 6,000 people, and for most of its recent history it has been, in the words of one local news report, home to few local dining options. Mayor Mark Crabtree told the Springfield Daily Citizen that a sit-down restaurant was one of the things residents had been asking for directly, saying, "I think that's what people are looking for in this area, is more of a sit-down restaurant." The city had picked up on the same sentiment through its own community surveys.
The building planned for the restaurant sat zoned C-1, a neighborhood business district designation that was never built to accommodate a full-service restaurant. To bring one in, the property first had to be rezoned to C-2, a general commercial classification. The Board of Aldermen voted unanimously in favor of that rezoning in March 2025, clearing the way for construction to start.
The process involved a public meeting, a motion, and a roll call.
What Finally Opened
The entrepreneur behind the project is John Palazzolo, whose family has been part of the Springfield area's pizza scene for nearly 20 years as the operators behind Rocco's Pizza locations built one at a time across southwest Missouri, including a Bolivar location he helped open in 2020. Palazzolo's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria opened at 5420 West Byp in Battlefield in the opening days of 2026, and it is the first sit-down concept the city has seen come out of that long-running community request.
The menu leans into full Italian comfort food rather than pizzeria basics alone. Diners have written in about the chicken parmesan and fettuccine alfredo, and the restaurant offers three signature calzones along with a build-your-own option, plus pasta ravioli. Reviewers have mentioned live music on weekend nights and closing a meal with tiramisu or cannoli, which tells you this was built as a place to linger, not just grab a slice.
For a city that had been asking for exactly this kind of dining option, watching it clear a zoning hurdle before it could even break ground, the opening carries a different weight than a new restaurant does in a place where restaurants open every month.
The Brewery That Already Proved It
Battlefield residents who have been paying attention already had one piece of evidence that a demand for local gathering space was real, and it predates Palazzolo's by four years. Wire Road Brewing Company opened as the city's first brewery in January 2022 at 4453 S. Timbercreek Avenue, and according to the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, it saw near-capacity crowds from its earliest nights open.
In a profile of Wire Road Brewing, co-owner Kary Walker said people like having a local place. The brewery took its name from the historic Wire Road itself, once a Native American travel route and later part of the telegraph line running from St. Louis to Fort Smith, Arkansas. It sits close to both Wilson's Creek National Battlefield and the Southcreek Greenways Trail, which means the crowd on a given Saturday is a mix of Battlefield neighbors, cyclists off the trail, and travelers passing through on their way toward Arkansas.
The taproom pours a rotating lineup that includes the hazy IPA Spirit Horse, the easy-drinking Cool Hand Kolsch, and a Scottish ale called Fiddlesticks, alongside food trucks that rotate daily and a covered, heated patio built for the outdoor space to work through most of the year.

Where the Evening Goes After Dinner
A full night in Battlefield does not have to end at the table. The city maintains its own small parks system that rarely shows up in visitor guides built for Springfield proper. Battlefield Park carries tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, playgrounds, and a pavilion. McBride School Park adds disc golf, an amphitheater, soccer fields, and its own trail system. Cherokee Trail of Tears Park marks a stretch of the historic Trail of Tears that runs directly through the city, and Battlefield hosts an annual Trail of Tears Remembrance event there each year.
For a longer walk, the trail systems at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield sit just west of town. The site draws more than 300,000 visitors annually according to the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Foundation, with a 4.9-mile paved auto tour offering eight interpretive stops and separate trail systems for walking, running, hiking, and horseback riding. It is also the reason the city carries the name it does, the Battle of Wilson's Creek having been fought on this ground in August 1861.
None of this required a zoning vote. It was already here. The dining options are what took a public process to catch up.
What This Means Going Forward
