Ozark runs on a quieter clock than most people notice. Finley River Park sits open sunrise to sunset almost every day of the year, except for a two-month blackout in November and December when the city closes the park to build the Festival of Lights. That single fact reshapes the local calendar. Everything worth doing along the river between now and Halloween is happening in a compressed window, and the restaurants, markets, and festivals along that same stretch are pacing themselves to fit.
If you already live here, this is a guide to using that window well.
Why August through early October matters
The river corridor is the beating heart of Ozark's food, event, and park life. The Ozark Mill, The Garrison, and the Ozark Farmers Market all cluster at Finley Farms. The city's biggest fall event, the Ozark Craft Fair, lands at Finley River Park a few weeks before the closure. Once the pavilions come down and the lights go up in November, the working park you kayak from and picnic at becomes a drive-through holiday attraction until January.
That gives residents roughly ten open weekends between now and the shutdown. Here is how to spend them.
The dining rotation, sorted by mood
Ozark's restaurant scene grew up fast. As 417 Magazine put it, when Finley Farms opened and brought three dining spots to town, "the restaurant scene in Ozark seemed to grow overnight." A local rotation looks something like this:
| Restaurant | Location | What locals go for |
|---|---|---|
| The Ozark Mill | Finley Farms, 802 Finley Farms Ln | Southern-inspired lunch and dinner with Finley River views; weekend brunch buffet |
| The Garrison | Finley Farms | Speakeasy entry, shareable plates, patio over the river |
| Raku Hibachi Sushi & Ramen | 1487 W. South St. | 12-hour ramen broth, fresh daily onigiri, hibachi |
| Vineyard Market | 1759 W. State Hwy J | Wine bistro with small plates and hand-tossed pizzas |
| Cafe B-29 | Downtown Ozark | Patty melts and neighborhood diner feel |
| Salvatore's Fresh Ristorante Italiano | Ozark | Reservable Italian with pasta and burnt ends |
| Yen Ching | 5301 N. 22nd St. | Long-standing Chinese, including a spicy take on Springfield-style cashew chicken |
Two of those need special attention because they've shifted the town's late-summer rhythm.
The Garrison rewards planning
Locals who have already done The Ozark Mill for brunch tend to graduate to The Garrison for slower evenings. You enter with a password, sit in a low-lit lounge, and order from a shareable menu that includes duck breast, a rosemary pound cake dessert, and a Millrace cocktail that has become something of a signature. There is a fried chicken plate on the menu that pays homage to the long-gone Riverside Inn, which older Ozark residents will recognize immediately. An eight-course tasting menu is available for anniversaries or slow Saturdays.
Raku is still new enough to feel novel
Raku Hibachi Sushi & Ramen opened on August 14, 2025, which means this fall is only its second late summer in Ozark. Kukuh Bayu Han Prakoso runs it with his uncle Billy Yuzar, a sushi chef of 20 years who also owns Kiko Hibachi & Sushi Express in Bolivar, and his cousin Raven Al Rasya. The name is built from the first two letters of Rasya's and Prakoso's first names and doubles as a Japanese word for comfort or enjoyment. Prakoso told the Springfield Daily Citizen he wanted visitors to feel, in his words, "I'm not in a small town. I feel like I'm in a big city." The dining room leans into that ambition with anime wallpaper, paper lanterns, and seating built from repurposed milk crates. Order the onigiri, made fresh daily with fillings like soft-boiled egg and chicken katsu with hot honey.
The Finley Farms weekday rhythm
The Ozark Farmers Market at Finley Farms is the through-line for the rest of the season. Two dates worth putting on the calendar:
- Thursday, August 27, 3:00 PM — Kids Markets at the Ozark Farmers Market
- Thursday, September 17, 10:00 AM — Ozark Farmers Market
Both are free. The Kids Markets track lets younger vendors set up their own stands alongside the regular market, which is one of the more genuinely charming ways to spend a late-summer afternoon at Finley Farms.
If you have out-of-town family visiting between market days, the self-guided history tour inside The Ozark Mill is a fair backup. The mill was originally built in 1833 and now houses a museum, general store, restaurant, and speakeasy under one roof.
The three weekends that anchor the fall
Three dates carry more weight than the rest.
October 2–4, 2026 — The 52nd Ozark Craft Fair returns to Finley River Park, with local makers and artisans set up indoors and out.
That fair is the last major event before the park changes character for the year. If you have been meaning to shop small for holiday gifts or pick up a hostess present for Thanksgiving, this is the window. According to The Craft Map, the fair spans the full weekend.
The other two anchors:
- The Ozark Boosters Club Rodeo just wrapped its 71st year in mid-July at 1200 N Riverside Rd. If you missed it, mark the third weekend of July for 2027; it books out fast.
- The Sertoma Duck Race Festival & Balloon Glow ran in June, but for planning purposes it's worth knowing the pattern: 10,000 rubber ducks race down the Finley, hot air balloons glow Friday night, fireworks close Saturday. It's a June event that fills every hotel room within twenty minutes of downtown.
Between those anchors, smaller neighborhood events fill in. The city publishes a 2026 Program Catalog through Ozark Parks and Recreation that is worth bookmarking if you have kids in local rec programs.
The river itself, before the lights go up
The Finley is walkable, wadeable, and paddleable, and the stretch nearest Finley River Park is the easiest launch in town. You can put a kayak in and paddle about a mile upstream and back for an unhurried afternoon. In warmer weeks, families wade in shallow spots along the bank. The park has three reservable pavilions in Red, Yellow, and Blue, each painted to match its name. The Red Pavilion seats up to 40, and the smaller Blue and Yellow Pavilions each seat around 20, which makes them the right size for a birthday, a small reunion, or a Sunday after church.
A quiet tip: the last two weekends of October are usually the calmest at Finley River Park before the crews come in to string lights. If you have been meaning to try a river picnic, that is the window to do it.
What this means for the next ten weekends
A working local calendar for the rest of the open season looks something like this:
- Late August — Kids Markets at Finley Farms on the 27th, Raku for dinner after.
- Early September — Vineyard Market for a small-plates Friday, kayak the Finley on Saturday morning.
- Mid-September — Ozark Farmers Market on the 17th, brunch at The Ozark Mill afterward.
- Late September — A quiet weekend. Book The Garrison. Reserve the Yellow Pavilion for the next family gathering.
- October 2–4 — Ozark Craft Fair. Plan around it.
- Mid-October — Salvatore's or Cafe B-29 on a cool evening, the last of the river walks before the park closes.
The rhythm here is not accidental. Ozark has grown into a small city with an outsized dining scene and a park that carries most of its civic weight. Rasya, one of Raku's co-owners, described the community here as "more active" than the smaller Missouri town they came from, and pointed to Ozark's growth as the reason. That growth is why the calendar is fuller now than it was five years ago, and why the two-month park closure hits harder than it used to.
